Zagros
Zagros is the biggest mountain range of Iran which begins from the northwest and runs towards the southwest of the country with more than 1600 km, stretching from the Turkey borders and northern of Iraq to the strait of Hormoz. Zagros is much bigger than Alborz both in length and width and there are many highlights of Iran destinations in it. This huge mountain range includes several cities, lots of towns and hundreds of villages and also many famous mountains like Dena (4409 m), Zard kuh (4221 m), Oshtoran kuh (4150 m) and also one of the biggest big walls in the world huge Bisotun with 1200 m height and also many other high mountains above 3000 or 4000 m. All of these have made the high potential for lots of adventures like mountaineering, rock climbing, ski touring, paragliding, canyoning, mountain biking, and many other activities.
Geology of Zagros
Zagros Mountain range was formed by the movement of the Arabian plate underneath the Eurasian plate. There are many old rocks close to the highest peaks in the Zagros Mountain ranges dating back to the Precambrian epoch, before 541 million years ago and some rocks date back to the Paleozoic time between 541- 252 million years ago. however, there are many rocks in the Zagros mountain range made of limestone and shale belong to the Mesozoic epoch (252-66 million years ago) and also the Paleogene era (23 million to 2.6 million years ago).
