Overview
Alamut Valley in central Alborz mountain ranges, with countless details that can’t be missed, is not just another mountain to climb but an amazing Iran adventure non-tourist destination for trekking and hiking. It is a place with a rich history, nature and wildlife, where you will pass plantations owned by local people who will undoubtedly invite you to enter their gardens and homes during your trek. The journey offers a challenging hike while also providing insight to lifestyles of the local villagers. One of the most interesting aspects of this trip is Alamut Castle that the Hashashin (known as the Assassins) built as a fortress more than 1100 years ago. Through this tour, you will learn some of Iran’s extensive history and see why Alamut region was chosen for their kingdom. If you wish to experience a real Iran adventure tour, don’t hesitate to choose trekking in Alamut valley.
Alamut means “eagle’s nest” and contains two big and the most important citadels of Ismailis: Lambsar and Alamut Castles. The area was controlled by Hassan-i Sabbah, the leader of Ismailis and his ASSASSINS for many years. Alamut was the headquarter for Assassins to campaign and preach to the new followers. Alamut Castle is a ruined fortress built on top of a high rock at the altitude of 2163 m above sea level. It was seized by Hassan-i Sabbah and his Assassins in 1090 AD and was functioning as the headquarter till 1256 AD. There are different narrations about the exact date of the construction and its founder, but it is said that it was built by the Jostanid or Justanid ruler about 865 AD. In 1256 AD, it was destroyed by the Mongols.
During the hike on Alamut valley, you will need a light backpack and the rest of your belongings will be transported by car to the following villages before you arrive at the guesthouse each night. The most desirable time to experience the beautiful Alamut region ranges from mid-April to mid-November. Each season offers different nature and beauty along the way.
